"Athena Rises" - A Short Story

Updated: Aug 15

This is a 20+ page short story I wrote for my epistolary class while I was a grad student in UNC Charlotte. I had never written epistolary before, but I decided to try my hand in it. The form, narrative, and style are inspired by a great number of stories I've greatly enjoyed. One notable inspiration is the SCP Foundation , a collaborative creative writing project where stories about the paranormal and anomalous are told through classified documents and transcripts.

"Athena Rises" is my first foray into epistolary writing, of which I am rather pleased with how it turned out. Told through three different types of text, the story revolves around a young mother who finds herself an unwilling test subject of a clandestine experiment conducted by an evil corporation. Below is an excerpt from the story:

Just a couple of days ago I was an art student evicted from my decrepit studio apartment for missing rent, not knowing what I would have for my next meal. Even with the scholarship that I got, I barely had enough to cover living expenses in NYC. But luck seemed to take a turn, because I signed up to an on-site study for this big shot pharmaceutical company, and they promised a 100,000 dollar reward in exchange for helping them understand the human brain. It seemed a too good to be true at first, but what more could I lose?

As it stands, "Athena Rises" is complete, but may still be subject to further revisions or continuations. To read the rest of the story, please click the button below.
